Connecting the Nintendo GameCube to a modern TV
The Nintendo GameCube has no built-in HDMI output, but it does offer excellent image quality via component or — for the DOL-001 model — via the digital AV output. With the right adapter you can play it crystal-clear on any modern TV.
What you need {#what-you-need}
First check your GameCube model:
- DOL-001 → digital AV output present (square connector next to the analogue one)
- DOL-101 → analogue output only
Option A — Digital HDMI adapter (DOL-001 only, best quality)
- GC Digital / Carby / EON GCHD HDMI adapter
- HDMI cable
Option B — Component cable (DOL-001 and DOL-101)
- Official Nintendo component cable or HD Retrovision GameCube
- Component input on TV or component-to-HDMI converter
Option C — Composite (works everywhere, lowest quality)
- Official Nintendo AV cable (composite)

DOL-001 or DOL-101?
Check the model number on the bottom of your GameCube. The DOL-001 has two AV connectors on the back: a large one for analogue and a small square one for digital. The DOL-101 has only the large analogue connector.
Connecting via digital HDMI adapter (DOL-001)
- Connect the HDMI adapter to the digital AV output (the small square connector)
- Connect an HDMI cable to your TV
- Select the correct HDMI input on your TV
- Turn on the GameCube
Connecting via component cable
- Connect the component cable to the analogue AV output of the GameCube
- Connect the 5 connectors (green/blue/red + 2× audio) to the component input on your TV
- Select the component input and turn on the GameCube
No component input? Use a component-to-HDMI converter.
Connecting via composite
- Connect the composite cable to the analogue AV output
- Connect the yellow (video) and red/white (audio) connectors to your TV
- Select the AV input on your TV
Note: official Nintendo component cables are expensive
The official Nintendo component cable for the GameCube is rare and can cost hundreds on the second-hand market. The HD Retrovision cable is an excellent alternative at a fraction of the price, giving the same sharp image.
Done
Via a digital HDMI adapter on the DOL-001 or a good component cable, the GameCube looks beautiful on a modern TV. Especially via the digital output, the image is surprisingly sharp for hardware from 2001.
