Installing an IPS screen in the Game Boy Advance

The original LCD screen of the Game Boy Advance is difficult to read even in good lighting. An IPS replacement screen is by far the most popular upgrade for the GBA — and the result is spectacular: bright, sharp, with vivid colours and perfectly readable in any lighting condition.

Watch out: buy the right kit

Some IPS kits require trimming the shell, others don't ("no-cut"). For beginners, a no-cut kit is strongly recommended — less risk, same result. Check that the listing says "OEM shell compatible" or "no trim required".

Step 1 — Open the housing

  1. Remove the batteries and battery cover
  2. Remove the 6 tri-wing screws on the back (including one under the battery cover)
  3. Carefully separate the front and back halves of the housing using a spudger — start at the bottom
  4. Slightly lift the circuit board and set it aside (ribbon cables are still attached)

Step 2 — Remove the original screen

  1. Remove the 2 Phillips screws holding the screen frame
  2. Carefully lift the screen frame free
  3. Slide the original LCD screen upward and out of its holder
  4. Disconnect the ribbon cable from the LCD — note the locking tab (small clip on the side)

Step 3 — Install the IPS screen

  1. Connect the ribbon cable of the IPS screen to the connector on the circuit board
  2. Close the connector lock carefully
  3. Place the IPS screen into the housing — it fits precisely in the opening (with a no-cut kit)
  4. Quick test: connect the batteries and briefly press the power button — the screen should light up

Tip: test before closing everything

Don't close the GBA fully before testing the screen. Once it's shut, all the screws are back in and you don't want to start again. Testing takes a minute and prevents frustration.

Step 4 — Close the housing

  1. Place the circuit board back into the rear housing
  2. Press the front and back halves of the housing together — you’ll hear them click
  3. Tighten the 6 tri-wing screws — not too tight, the plastic screw holes are fragile
  4. Reattach the battery cover

Done

Turn on the GBA and enjoy the difference. If the screen is very bright, you can adjust brightness and colour temperature via a hidden menu (check the instruction sheet that came with your specific IPS kit).
