Set up an Everdrive 64 on the Nintendo 64
The N64 library is hard to complete due to region locking and high collector prices. An Everdrive 64 solves that: one cartridge, SD card in, full library available — including Japanese titles that never came to Europe.
What you need {#what-you-need}
- Everdrive 64 (v2.5 or X7 for best compatibility) or a clone variant
- MicroSD card — minimum 4GB, formatted as FAT32
- Game ROM files — from your own cartridges (.z64, .n64 or .v64 format)
The Everdrive 64 X7 is the newest and most expensive version — with extra features like RTC (real-time clock) for games that need it. The v2.5 is cheaper and works great for most games. Choose based on your budget.
Step by step
1. Format the SD card
Format a MicroSD card as FAT32. On macOS: Disk Utility → MS-DOS (FAT) → Erase.
2. Download the firmware
Download the latest firmware from the Krikzz website (the maker of Everdrive). Unpack the archive.
3. Copy firmware to SD
Copy the firmware files to the root of the SD card.
4. Put your games on the SD card
Create a folder (e.g. N64) and copy your game ROMs into it. Supported formats: .z64, .n64, .v64.
5. Insert the SD card in the Everdrive
Slide the SD card into the slot. Insert the Everdrive cartridge into the N64.
6. Start up
The N64 starts with the Everdrive menu. Navigate with the controller to the desired game and press A.
The Everdrive 64 also supports viewing Game Boy Camera photos and certain N64 tools. But the main use is simple: choose a game and play.
Save games
Save games are automatically stored on the SD card as .sav files next to the ROM file. Back up the SD card regularly.
