Replacing the joystick on the Atari 2600

The Atari CX40 joystick is iconic but after decades of use (or storage) it can become unresponsive or break entirely. Fortunately there are several options: refurbishing the original joystick, buying an identical replacement, or choosing a modern ergonomic alternative.

What you need {#what-you-need}

Compatibility: DB9 connector

The Atari 2600 uses a standard DE-9 (DB9) connector for the joystick. This is the same connector used by the Mega Drive. Many Mega Drive controllers therefore also work on the Atari 2600 — though the button mapping may differ.

Option A — Buy a replacement joystick

The simplest solution. Find a second-hand CX40 joystick or buy a new compatible controller. Check the connector (DB9) and test before use.

Option B — Repair the original joystick

If the joystick sometimes responds but not always, cleaning is often enough:

  1. Open the joystick by removing the 4 PH1 screws on the bottom
  2. Gently separate the two halves
  3. Spray contact cleaner on the metal contact points at the bottom
  4. Leave to dry (contact cleaner evaporates quickly)
  5. Close the joystick and test

If the stick itself feels loose or is broken, the internal rubber piece may be worn. Replacement rubbers are available from retro gaming webshops.

Note: original joysticks can feel stiff

After decades in storage the stick can feel stiff. Moving it carefully usually resolves this. Never force it — the internal construction is simple but the pins can break under too much force.

Connecting

The joystick connects via the DB9 connector on the front of the Atari 2600 (left port for player 1, right port for player 2). Plug-and-play — no additional steps needed.

Done

With a good joystick the Atari 2600 experience is complete. Space Invaders, Pitfall and Asteroids play exactly as intended — joystick in hand.
