What is the Game Boy Advance SP?

The Game Boy Advance SP (AGS) is an improved version of the GBA, released in 2003. The SP stands for “Special” — and that name is earned: the clamshell design protects the screen, the built-in rechargeable battery makes AA batteries unnecessary, and the screen finally has proper lighting. That last point was the biggest complaint about the original GBA.

There are two versions: the AGS-001 with a frontlight (less visible in direct sunlight) and the later AGS-101 with a true backlight — that’s the version most people are after. The 101 is rarer and slightly more expensive, but the difference in picture quality is immediately obvious.

The GBA SP is fully backwards compatible with Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges — and has (like the original GBA) a GBA game library of hundreds of titles.

Advice: Look specifically for the AGS-101. You can identify it by the model number on the back. The backlit screen makes an enormous difference.

Tip

Never want to hunt for that specific Nintendo charger again? USB-C charging mods are available for the GBA SP. Takes about an hour to install and you're done with that awkward connector for good.

Watch out: missing charger

The GBA SP charger is regularly left out or sold separately with second-hand units. Make sure you get it — or order one straight away. Without a charger the SP is useless, since it no longer takes AA batteries.

Digital: EZ-Flash Omega or Everdrive

Just like the GBA, you can use a flashcart to load games via SD card. The EZ-Flash Omega works great on the SP.

Homebrew

The GBA SP runs exactly the same homebrew as the original GBA — via an EZ-Flash Omega or similar flashcart. From original games to emulators for NES, SNES and Sega Master System: the GBA SP handles it all.

The clamshell design, the lit screen, the built-in battery — the SP is the GBA the way it always should have been.
