What is the Game Boy Advance?

The Game Boy Advance is a handheld gaming console by Nintendo, released in 2001. It’s the direct successor to the Game Boy Color and marks the transition to 32-bit gaming in your pocket. With more than 81 million units sold worldwide, the GBA is one of the best-selling handhelds of all time.

What makes the GBA so appealing today: the cartridges are robust, the hardware is simple and easy to repair, and there’s a lively modding community continuously breathing new life into it. The original screen, however, is dark — the GBA had no backlight. That’s exactly why the IPS screen mod is so popular: it completely transforms the device.

An extra bonus: the GBA is also backwards compatible with all Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges. Three generations on one device.

Where to find games?

Physical

Watch out: counterfeit cartridges

GBA fakes are everywhere, especially Pokémon titles and popular RPGs. Suspiciously cheap on a marketplace or AliExpress? You're almost certainly buying a fake cartridge. These can lose save files, corrupt data or simply crash. Buy from a specialist shop or check an online counterfeit guide to learn how to spot a fake.

Digital: flashcart

With an EZ-Flash Omega or similar flashcart you can play ROMs via a MicroSD card. Technically you’re in a legal grey area when using ROMs you don’t own. Homebrew software (see below) is completely legal.

Mods & upgrades

The GBA is the modding handheld par excellence. These are the most popular upgrades:

Homebrew

The GBA homebrew scene is active and diverse. From custom games to emulators for systems like the NES, Sega Master System and Game Boy — you can turn the GBA into a proper retro machine.

The easiest way to run homebrew is via a flashcart like the EZ-Flash Omega. A full homebrew guide is available on the Game Boy Advance homebrew page.

Stuck? No worries. The GBA community is one of the most helpful in the retro gaming world.
